If you have never read anything by this very gifted writer and humanitarian, I can’t recommend this book enough. He had just been to Cuba and Haiti, where he saw the effects of American capitalism and imperialism.

I thought I knew Langston Hughes from reading his poetry, but this book made me realize what a Renaissance man he really was.
