Kobold Guide to Worldbuilding by Janna Silverstein
Worldbjilding of the wlrldbuilding are designers from the fantasy role-playing game industry, which biases the book towards advice for the design of fantasy game worlds. Learn the secrets of designing a pantheon, creating a setting that provokes conflict, determining which historical details are necessary, and so much more. May 30, Dave McGraw rated tl it was amazing. Things like that really bog down these essays and what’s left isn’t all that useful.
The next essay provides overview and explanation for what a world bible is and how you can go about building and maintaining one. But I don’t get the feeling that audience is especially large for the book. While it is primarily aimed at a fantasy audience, the methods described could easily be used in most other genres.
Many people recommend this book for aspiring fantasy authors as well. Like all of Kobold’s books on Game Design, it is system neutral and frequently compares the successes of oobold different games’ approaches to certain issues. There are books that give instructions for how to create if that’s what you are looking for. Very deep understanding and great share of ideas from these well known authors. No trivia or quizzes yet.

He knows what he’s talking about and he’ll cover your ass before you need it to be covered. It has the kind of advice you’d give to a film director preparing to make his first period film, not the kind of thing you’d give either to a novice GM writing his or her first world or to an experienced GM looking for ways to work more efficiently. I think they serve some introductory purpose, but they seem so vague and basic that I doubt anyone who is familiar enough with the term “worldbuilding” to pick up this book would really gather that much from them.
The first five or six essays I easily could’ve skipped.
Ultimately, I don’t know that I’d really recommend this book to a wide range of people. While the editors might believe that to be true, the book was mostly pretty useless to me as a novelist. The Kobold Guide to Worldbuilding is a small book.
The former discusses the reasons why monotheism is uncommon in fantasy settings, and then discusses some ways that it could be used. The Kobold Guide to Worldbuilding will spark some new ideas and help you add the proper doses of verisimilitude and outlandishness. My personal favorites were There’s a lot of good ideas and advice in this collection of essays on worldbuiling. As opposed to just use free internet resources? While the book is more or less focussed on the aspirant game-world designer – with a nod to those of use that do it as a sport and a pastime – much of the content would be equally applicable to fantasy writers looking to improve their world-building chops.
However, even these essays are marked by their inability to express much in the way of successes rather than denoting failures. A great collection of short essays on designing fictional worlds. I will be returning to this tome frequently. Philip Athans’s Guide to Writing Fantasy provides a similar, but larger, treatment of theory, and Park and Dullemond’s Complete Guide in 3 volumes is extremely thorough. The last couple essays weren’t great and could more or less be cut kbold very little being lost.
I got it to help me spark ideas and provide some guidance on effective methods, exercises, and organization techniques for world-building for use in writing speculative fiction, especially high fantasy.
