How can you not enjoy a mystery that has a library book as one of the major clues to solving the murder? Behold, Here’s Poison Georgette Heyer. But when he did he get the knife?

Whilst the delicate matter of inheritance could be the key to this crime, the real conundrum is how any of the suspects could have entered the locked room to commit this foul deed. Everyone else is pretty much an asshole as well, but that didn’t make me like him better. Heyer wonderfully captures the underlying tensions of the house party and the annoyance of everyone at having their Christmas disrupted by a murder.

Before I start my review I’ll just get two things out of the way. No Wind of Blame and Detection Unlimited. Even Matilda, while sympathetically drawn, lacked sufficient personality for me to really warm up to her. I wasn’t anticipating from the title that this would be one of her detective novels, since I’ve been working my way through her historical romances and the title sounded more envjous one of those.

I found it to be a bit drawn out and it ended very abruptly. Overall a nice fun Christmas mystery. I am starting chapter 9 and I think this may be my 1st time reading a book in which I find all of the characters disagreeable. cascx


As usual with Heyer’s stories, her cast of characters fulfill every “ic” I can think of: Why Shoot a Butler? While some critics thought her novels were too detailed, others cxsca the level of detail to be Heyer’s greatest asset.

Stephen, a misunderstood man because of ill-mannered and hot tempered behaviour a la Darcy from Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. She had a large cast of quirky characters and she produced them well.

Feb 22, Joy rated it really liked it. While I may not read the mysteries again, I’ve had lots of fun with them over the eenvious few months. Heyer’s large volume of works included Regency romances, mysteries and historical fiction. The second half is where the murder occurs and the whodunit gets going.

Looking for casc books? The method of the kill was not hinted in envioys way that I thought we were supposed to be able to figure out as we read it, so that was not worth puzzling over.

Well, I honestly didn’t like anyone in the book all that much, so I wasn’t terribly invested in who was going to go off to jail – or even anticipating who would be killed. This is the first book I’ve read by Heyer with a woman of character. There may be even more motives in this family gathering than in your own, though.

Price drop for one GH cqsca 3 17 Jan 16, This is a classic “locked door” mystery set during the holidays, making this a good mystery to pull out this time of year. By GH’s standards this was a well constructed mystery although view spoiler [ if you know the history of Elizabeth of Austria you have a bit of an advantage!

Snvious enjoyed this book, but it was hard going the first half-once I got past the interminable family squabbling, the sardonic grinning Stephen, and the quelling looks from butler Sturry is was very good. I eagerly turned this audio version on and settled in for some enjoyment. Not the best by the author, but still engaging.

The clever young man is a stock character of Heyer’s — almost every mystery of hers has one, whether clownish, sarcastic, socially-inappropriate, or merely ill-behaved. Probably something so simple that a child could have spotted it. The jocular old uncle staying with his crotchety brother at Nat’s country house is determined to have a Christmas house party. She is a great storyteller.
