The story sets the world of the rich and powerful against the world of work and poverty very effectively. Strangely, Pere Goriot is not the main character. Čiča Gorio by Honoré de Balzac (4 star ratings)

The book was written in the early 19th century so it freely judges the Pere Goriot is the first book of Balzac I’ve read. I find myself using theatrical terms when describing the novel, as it had a definite play-like quality. Vautrin, for example, slips in and out of the story — offering advice to Rastignac, ridiculing Goriot, bribing the housekeeper Christophe to let him in after hours — before he is revealed icca a master criminal.

It is these characters and a few others that the story revolves around.

The story would end with his funeral; with only Eugene, the house boy who had always liked the old man who was kind to him, and two empty carriages sent by his sons-in-law in attendance. Balzac had clearly expounded in his seminal work the vanity and selfishness of the Parisian community of 19th century. I did enjoy the story, though – melodramatic as it was at times.

You think I blame it?
