I love how Capote matter-of-factly drops sentences that depict the horror of the crime done after a rather mundane recollection truamn events. I despised this book.
His first novel, Other Voices, Other Roomspublished instayed on The New York Times bestseller list for nine weeks and became controversial because of the photograph of Capote triman to promote the novel, posing seductively and gazing into the camera.
Then I aimed the gun. Several reviews of this collection of short stories by Truman Capote treat it as if these stories are subpar because he wrote them when he was in his teens and early 20s.

In his tales, Capote’s characters have a lot of variance to them, hailing as they do from different walks of life – from the aforementioned downtrodden Tim in ‘Parting of the Ways’, to the privileged protagonist of ‘Hilda’, who is troubled in an entirely different way.

Capote compiled over 8, pages of notes, along with interviews of those who were part of the investigation, the towns people and the murderers. The writing was stellar, the characterization was well done, the scenes were vividly captured, and the dialog was spot-on. Instead, the book’s suspense is based largely on a totally new capotw in detective stories: The novel is superbly crafted, with spot-on pacing with the exception of the first chapter which, though necessary, does draaaaaaaaaag on a wheeeeeeeeee bit and, more importantly, characters so real that they don’t even seem real.
